European countries are discussing the creation of a military contingent to ensure security in Ukraine after the end of hostilities. This was stated by the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Ruben Brekelmans. According to him, a 'coalition of the willing' is giving considerable attention to ensuring a safe sky in Ukraine. Plans are still being developed, but it is known that the Netherlands may provide F-35 fighters.
'In aviation, it is relatively easy to determine how much each country can provide. It is more difficult to organize the entire mission and clearly define the role of the aviation component,' explained Brekelmans. The minister also stressed the urgency of preparation since Russia is still not ready for peace. 'No one knows how peace negotiations will proceed: they may take a long Time, or they may suddenly lead to a breakthrough. And then we must be ready for Europe to play its role,' said Brekelmans. According to him, the USA may also participate in this contingent, but it is still unknown in what capacity. 'There are many 'shades of gray' regarding how the USA may be involved. For example, in the form of support. When the plans are clear and when the USA's position is known, then we can discuss it in the Netherlands,' noted Brekelmans. The conditions for the activation of hostilities have accelerated military assistance from the Netherlands to Ukraine. In particular, they have allocated funds for drones and the IHAWK system for air defense. The minister emphasized that Ukraine will require long-term support even after the cessation of hostilities. 'Regardless of what happens at the negotiating table, we must continue to support Ukraine,' concluded Brekelmans.
