A major power outage occurred in Portugal and Spain, which was unprecedented for many people. According to Euronews, this led to a lack of electricity, communication with relatives, transportation, and bank cards. Major cities were hit hardest by traffic issues, hospitals, and medicine warehouses. A pharmacy in Madrid suffered significant losses due to spoiled expensive medicines that were stored in refrigerators without proper temperature control.
Hospitals were forced to rely on backup food supplies, and train stations and airports ceased operations. Bank cards became useless, so people who had cash hurried to buy essential goods in supermarkets. Tourists were greatly disappointed as they could not go on excursions, have lunch, or buy souvenirs due to the lack of electricity. Authorities reported that by Tuesday evening, electricity supply in Spain was restored by 50%, and the crisis was fully overcome after Tuesday morning.
On April 28, Spain and Portugal experienced one of the largest power outages in European history, during which the countries lost over 10 GW of capacity.
