The number of smokers in the world has significantly decreased: WHO named the reasons.

Over the last fifteen years, the number of people who smoke tobacco has decreased by a third, according to the WHO. This reduction has occurred due to the increase in tobacco taxes. This has been possible during the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
According to the WHO, since 2005, the number of tobacco smokers has decreased by 118 million people. Increasing taxes on tobacco products has proven to be the most effective way to reduce tobacco consumption. In addition to the decrease in smokers, there is also a decline in tobacco use as one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and other chronic illnesses. However, despite this, manufacturers continue to introduce new harmful products to the market, such as e-cigarettes. Tobacco consumption negatively affects the development and economy of countries. It is estimated that governments spend 1.8% of their gross product to provide tobacco to smokers.
The implementation of the provisions of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is an important step in protecting public health, the economy, and the environment for the coming years.
