Three employees of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) are accused of causing traffic accidents with casualties. The State Bureau of Investigations and the Office of the Prosecutor General have already announced suspicions against the law enforcement officers.

The NABU provided an official comment regarding the incidents on Telegram.

As stated by the bureau, there are three separate traffic accidents, one of which occurred in 2023, and two in 2021. According to NABU representatives, in each case, the employees provided first aid to the victims and informed the appropriate authorities. All actions were properly documented and confirmed by the results of the internal control management's investigations.

“The employees did not use their official position for personal gain, did not attempt to evade responsibility, but on the contrary – fully assisted in establishing the circumstances of the events and provided all necessary explanations and documents upon request from the investigation”, the bureau stated.

Based on this, the NABU considers the searches and the choice of preventive measures for employees to be groundless.

“Given these circumstances, the conduct of mass searches for events that occurred two to four years ago, as well as the initiation of requests for preventive measures in the form of alternative detention, appears incomprehensible. Requests have also been submitted for the suspension of all three employees from their positions, despite the absence of risks of influencing the investigation”, the bureau's statement reads.

Traffic accidents involving NABU employees

On July 21, the SBI announced suspicions against three NABU employees for causing three traffic accidents.

According to the investigation, one of the law enforcement officers, leaving a secondary road in Kyiv, collided with a vehicle on the main road. After the impact, his car flew onto the sidewalk and hit a pedestrian, who had to have his left leg amputated due to the injuries sustained.

Another bureau employee lost control while overtaking on the Kyiv-Odesa highway, causing the car to veer off the road, overturn, and crash into a gas station. Serious injuries, including fractures, a ruptured spleen, and a head concussion, were sustained by a passenger of the vehicle.

During the third traffic accident, a law enforcement officer hit a woman at a crosswalk while she was crossing the road on a green signal. The victim sustained moderate injuries.

Currently, the issue of preventive measures for the defendants in the case is being resolved. According to the SBI, all three face up to 8 years in prison.

Employees of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) have been charged with committing three traffic accidents with casualties. The NABU claims that the accused provided medical assistance to the victims and facilitated the investigation in establishing the circumstances of the events. The NABU considers the searches and the selection of preventive measures for its employees to be unfounded. The possibility of applying preventive measures in the form of detention against the defendants in the criminal case is being analyzed.
