Unique Database on the Shadow Oil Tanker Fleet Helping Russia and Iran Evade Sanctions
The War & Sanctions portal has published a dossier containing information about 238 oil tankers that provide income for Russia and Iran and pose a threat to environmental security. These vessels assist in circumventing international sanctions.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has informed about the release of such information.
Obsolete Vessels Without Proper Insurance Threaten Global Security
The shadow fleet comprises over a thousand obsolete vessels without proper insurance, accounting for 17% of the global oil tanker fleet. Recently, there have been over 50 incidents involving these tankers.
Russia and Iran Earn Billions from Oil Exports
In 2023, Russia earned $188 billion from oil exports, while Iran earned nearly $53 billion. The funds are used for missile development, nuclear programs, supporting terrorist activities, and other dangerous objectives.
Russian Shadow Fleet for Transporting Oil to Asia
After losing the European market due to sanctions, Russia spent about $10 billion to form its own shadow fleet for transporting oil to Asia, particularly China and India. Additionally, they utilize the services of the 'Iranian Ghost Armada'.
War & Sanctions Database Helps Sort Tankers by Main Operators
The database of the War & Sanctions portal allows sorting oil tankers by operators that were founded in 2022-2023 and quickly assembled a fleet of obsolete vessels to circumvent sanctions on transporting Russian oil.
