It became known how many Ukrainians left for abroad in 2024.

In 2024, the number of Ukrainians who crossed the state border amounted to 30.11 million. Of this number, 2% did not return, which accounts for almost half a million people. The number of citizens who remained abroad tripled compared to the previous year. This was reported by 'Opendatabot'.
In 2024, the difference between departures and returns was 443 thousand people, which is 3.3 times more than in 2023, when this figure was only 134 thousand. Particularly many Ukrainians stayed abroad in June, namely 194 thousand.
Positive balance of returns
In three months in 2024, a positive balance of returns was recorded: in April, 58 thousand more people returned to Ukraine than left, in July - 23 thousand, and in August - 89 thousand.
In total, during the three years of the war, about 3 million Ukrainians remained abroad, which is almost equal to the figures for 11 years before the war (2011-2021), when 3.3 million people left the country. These data take into account only crossings through official checkpoints, while there is no precise information about citizens who left temporarily occupied territories or emigrated illegally.
As of August 31, 2024, 4.2 million Ukrainians had temporary protection status in European Union countries. Of these, 60% were in Germany (1.1 million), Poland (975 thousand), and the Czech Republic (376 thousand).
A pilot project is planned for the beginning of 2025, which will facilitate the return of Ukrainians from abroad.
