The Russian Federation has sentenced a soldier who voluntarily surrendered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the first time.


The trial of the first criminal case regarding voluntary surrender to the Ukrainian Armed Forces has concluded in the South Sakhalinsk garrison military court. The serviceman Roman Ivanishin was accused of surrendering and desertion. He received a punishment of 15 years in a strict regime colony with the deprivation of his military rank of 'junior sergeant'.
Roman Ivanishin was a mining foreman in Sakhalin and was mobilized for military service. After surrendering to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the 'DNR', he recorded a video calling on other Russian servicemen to flee their units. Following a swap for Ukrainian prisoners of war, the Russian side initiated criminal proceedings against him.
In the USA, he was also sentenced to imprisonment and control for smuggling American microelectronics intended for military purposes to Russia.
