UN Security Council adopts US resolution on the anniversary of the war.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for peace between Russia and Ukraine with the same text that was proposed by the US for approval in the General Assembly.
Amendments proposed by European countries, emphasizing the need to respect Ukraine's territorial integrity and recognize Russia as an aggressor, were not supported by the Security Council.
The text prepared by the American delegation consists of one sentence: 'The General Assembly, expressing sorrow over the tragic loss of life during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, reaffirming that the main purpose of the United Nations, as stated in the UN Charter, is to maintain international peace and security and to peacefully settle disputes, calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for further achieving lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.'
The resolution was voted for by 10 countries (the USA, Russia, China, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Guyana, Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Algeria), nobody voted 'against', and 5 countries abstained (the UK, France, Denmark, Greece, Slovenia).
The French Ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, called for peace based on the UN Charter and international law, clearly distinguishing between the aggressor - Russia, and the victim - Ukraine.
He added that 'there will be no peace and security anywhere if aggression is rewarded and if the law of the jungle prevails.'
The UK Ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, emphasized the need to respect the UN Charter and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
According to her, 'the way this war ends and the conditions for peace can only be determined through negotiations with Ukraine.' She stressed: 'No peace will be sustainable without Ukraine's consent.'
Moreover, a similar text proposed by the US for consideration in the UN General Assembly was also approved, with amendments from European countries.
