The role of lend-lease and the USSR in the victory of World War II

Historian and people's deputy Volodymyr Vyatrovych spoke about the myths of World War II, particularly about lend-lease and the role of the USSR in the victory. In an interview with 'Glavkom', he explained how the Soviet Union did not return most of the lend-lease to the USA and who made the victory in the war possible.

The German offensive of 1941 came against a Ukraine ravaged by the Soviet regime, after which the Soviet Union lacked resources to stop the offensive. Also, according to Vyatrovych, the mass loyalty of Soviet citizens to the Germans was in its own way a warning about the crimes of the communist regime of the 1920s-1930s.

So even before the Allies landed in Normandy in 1944, it was the support of the Western world within the framework of lend-lease that allowed the USSR to endure. Therefore, I emphasize once again: the victory in World War II is definitely not just a Soviet contribution. It would have been impossible without both military and material assistance from allies

Vyatrovych also noted that the USSR never fully returned the lend-lease to the USA as a loan, and this amount remained uncompensated. The historian also discussed reparations and the removal of industry from Germany to the territory of the Soviet Union.

According to Vyatrovych, today's society does not know how to wisely combine a modern approach with monuments of the past. He urged to seek a 'golden mean' in preserving historical memory.

This meeting with Volodymyr Vyatrovych turned out to be extremely interesting and informative, forcing one to reflect on the contribution of lend-lease and the role of the USSR in the events of World War II.
