Trudeau: Trump Uses Statements About Turning Canada Into a State to Divert Attention from Tariffs
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained why U.S. President Donald Trump speaks about turning Canada into the 51st state. According to Trudeau, Trump's comments are an attempt to distract attention from the effects of the tariffs.
'President Trump, who is a highly skilled negotiator, is trying to rally forces around the discussion of a 25% tariff on oil, gas, electricity, steel, aluminum, lumber, and concrete,' Trudeau stated, as reported by RBC-Ukraine citing CNN.
CNN reminds that Trump promised to increase tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China from his first day in office.
'On January 20th, as one of my first orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on ALL goods coming from Mexico and Canada and their stupid open borders. This tariff will remain in effect until drugs, particularly fentanyl, and all illegal aliens stop this invasion of our country!', Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Continuing to comment on this topic, Trudeau stated in an interview with CNN that such a policy could lead to significant cost increases for American businesses and consumers.
'Everything that American consumers buy in Canada will suddenly become much more expensive if he (Trump - ed.) continues to impose these tariffs,' Trudeau stated.
CNN notes that Canada, Mexico, and China are the largest trading partners of the U.S.
