Necrosis, gangrene, and tuberculosis: the condition of Ukrainian soldiers returning from captivity.

According to Andriy Yusov, the Deputy Head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, many of the Ukrainian soldiers who returned home as part of the prisoner exchange have serious illnesses and injuries due to inhumane conditions of detention and lack of medical treatment.
«There is necrosis, there is gangrene, there is tuberculosis, there are many other things and words that should not resonate in the modern world. But this is the reality», he explained.
The youngest of the released soldiers is only 42 years old. Most of them were under enemy control since 2022, having defended Mariupol. On June 19, Ukraine exchanged prisoners of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service with Russian forces.
Veterans' conditions
The President pointed out that most military personnel had been in captivity since 2022. Among the released were defenders who participated in combat operations in various territories of Ukraine. It is important to note that Ukraine also returned prisoners taken on June 14.
Prisoner exchange and Russian propaganda
Ukrainian military personnel returning home face difficulties due to poor conditions and lack of medical treatment during captivity. The prisoner exchange is an important task for the Ukrainian authorities, but Russia uses this process to discredit Ukraine and strengthen its influence.
During the prisoner exchange with Russia, many Ukrainian soldiers who had been under enemy control since 2022 returned home with serious illnesses and injuries due to poor detention conditions and lack of necessary medical treatment. This underscores the importance of improving conditions for the detention of Ukrainian prisoners of war and emphasizes the need for humane and dignified treatment of them.Read also
